Hi Maggie,

Yes, MLA does recommend just using the page number when you’re referring to the same source repeatedly within a paragraph. However, they stress that you should only do this when it doesn’t create any ambiguity. For example, if you cite only Hemingway in a paragraph, include his name the first time and only the page number for all subsequent citations. But if for example you cite Hemingway three times, then Smith one time, then Hemingway again, the Smith citation and the first Hemingway citation after it should include the author name so there’s no risk of confusion. Also reintroduce the author when you cite them for the first time in a new paragraph.

Or can I eventually stop citing their last name within the particular paragraph if it is obvious I am quoting from their book?
For context, I’m citing Hemingway. Because I list many different quotes throughout my paragraphs from the same book/source, do I still cite it as (Hemingway 42) or just (42) and then cite other authors when I’m pulling from different sources?

Hi Joseph,

In cases of double-barreled surnames like that, the two names should both be treated as part of the surname, whether or not they’re hyphenated, as long as you’re sure that both are surnames. So in your case it would be “Hunter Bailey, Jane.”

Example, Jane Hunter married Elaine Bailey. She goes by Jane Hunter Bailey. Should it be cited Bailey, Jane Hunter?
